Why?
Self-harm can be an experience shrouded in secrecy and layered with misunderstandings. It’s an experience where dialogue can be difficult, evoking strong feelings that can be hard to bear, share and explore. Loved ones and practitioners can find themselves stuck in a loop, trying to convince someone they are trying to support to stop hurting themselves without the space to sensitively explore the experience from different perspectives.
This 1-day experiential workshop will explore how the ideas and practices of Open Dialogue can resource us in these challenging dialogues about self-harm, offering support for both personal and professional relationships.
When?
9am – 5pm (UK time) on the 23 November 2026 (online), book online at https://www.tixtree.com/e/dialogues-with-self-harm-4dd9badfe245
About the workshop
This participatory workshop explores what the principles and practices of Open Dialogue can offer people supporting someone who self harms. We offer a relational and network approach to exploring self harm in context. We will share how dialogical practice offers a way to explore the complexities of strong feelings and different perspectives that can surround self harm. The workshop will equip people with ways of opening and holding conversations around self-harm and navigating them with care and sensitivity. We will explore ways of talking together that creates space for everyone to have a voice and, ultimately, to foster connection and mutual understanding.
All attendees will receive a certificate of attendance on completion of the course, and access to an online resource pack including slides and relevant articles.

This workshop is suitable for anyone wishing to learn more about talking about self-harm. People with Lived Experience (personal or as a supporter) are welcome, as are those who come from professional backgrounds – in health services, social care, community and the voluntary sector
We acknowledge that some attendees may have lived experience of self-harm. This is welcome and, also, we ask that participants look after themselves and their own needs during the workshop.
