Lived Experience & Open Dialogue

Why?

Open Dialogue is an approach that asks us to meet humans as a human, with a thoughtful level of transparency and authenticity. Yet there is, at present, little guidance on how we might use our Lived Experience within the dialogues we have with those we are trying to support. There are also few spaces to consider what the principles and practices of Open Dialogue might offer Lived Experience or Peer Support work more broadly.

This three day experiential workshop provides a valuable opportunity to explore the ways in which Lived Experience can inform Open Dialogue work and vice versa. It is a space to reflect on one’s own Lived Experience and how we might use it to create spaces for the experiences of those people and networks we wish to support.

When?

9am – 5pm on the 4, 5 & 9 June 2026 – A 3-day workshop.

About The Workshop

Together, we will explore:

  • How the principles and practices of Open Dialogue can inform Lived Experience / Peer Support work, more broadly
  • What Lived Experience / Peer Support work offers to Open Dialogue and related approaches
  • How aspects of our own Lived Experience can be evoked whilst supporting others – and how we might navigate this
  • Working with our own inner polyphony – the many voices/perspectives we hold
  • Options for articulating our Lived Experience when we feel it might be relevant
  • Navigating dilemmas that arise when using one’s Lived Experience
  • Power, credibility and mutuality
  • Working in teams that do not primarily come from a Lived Experience lens
  • Resourcing oneself, self-care and community

Who?

This course is ideal for both Open Dialogue practitioners who wish to explore ways of navigating their Lived Experience in the work AND those interested in Open Dialogue who come from a Lived Experience and/or Peer Support background. This might include those with Intentional Peer Support training, for example, or those who work within the Hearing Voices Network ethos.
